On
Saturday October 12, 2019, a Beauty Point resident called
Brian Van Nevel and said a loon had been swimming in circles
in front of his home for at least a day. Brian and his
friend Grace checked it out (in the sleet and wind) and
determined the loon had fishing line wrapped around its
body, holding its left wing and leg against its side.
As they approached the loon would dive, making it impossible
to get close.
Fast forward to Thursday afternoon, October 17th. Brian
& Grace were out fishing and noted the loon close
by. They approached it several times, the last time it
didn’t dive and Grace was able to net it. They removed
the line and jig, noting the loon was cooperative and
didn’t seem harmed in any way, just tired. When they released
it it's wings and legs were functioning normally.
We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. A big thanks
to Brian and Grace for their kindness in helping the loon.
