Danger Thin Ice!

Early on morning of Sunday January 27th, 2008 a pickup with flatbed went into the lake on the south side of Cherry Point.

The two young men in the vehicle were able to get out safely after getting a little wet. The depth of the water was about 9 feet. The ice where the vehicle went in was about 2 inches thick while the rest of the lake is over 24 inches thick.

The tire in first picture marks the spot where the vehicle was under water. A tow truck on the shore was able to use a cable to pull it up and out. Three deputies from Sheriff’s Department wore wet suits and used a chain saw to cut the ice. Only 20 feet from the hole the ice was already over a foot thick, and they were able to get it up onto the ice at that point.

Jim Barrett has talked to the Sheriff's Department about obtaining signage to mark this area in the future.

Lesson learned: Be very careful of the ice around Cherry Point - even when there is ample ice on the rest of the lake!
